While no coop can ever be 100% predator-proof, the Large Penthouse Bundle is designed with multiple security features. The chew-resistant recycled plastic construction is far tougher than wood, and small ventilation openings prevent access by common predators. The coop includes a lockable rear door and a reinforced front door with rotating metal lock. For extra protection, the Automatic Door Opener closes the coop at dusk, and the run’s anti-dig skirts help prevent animals from digging underneath.

No — provided the coop is placed in shade, which is recommended for all chicken coops regardless of colour or material. This is such a common question that we asked Dr. Daniel Cervenkov, Professor of Thermodynamics at the University of Oxford. He explained that once a coop is out of direct sunlight, colour has only a very limited effect on temperature. The two factors that matter most are shade and ventilation. Nestera coops are designed with large ventilation openings to promote constant airflow, helping prevent heat build-up inside the coop. Just as you wouldn’t leave a dog sitting in direct sun on a hot day, any chicken coop — wooden, plastic, light or dark — should always be placed in shade during warm weather. Many Nestera coops are used successfully in very hot regions such as Texas and Arizona, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C). When positioned correctly with shade and good airflow, they provide a comfortable environment for chickens. In short: shade + ventilation matter far more than the colour of the coop.

Unfortunately, nothing is 100% red mite-proof. However, Nestera chicken coops are cleverly designed to be extremely red mite-resistant! Red mites are tiny, and live in cracks and joints in poultry housing.
