How to choose the right chicken coop

Picking a coop comes down to three things: how many hens you keep, how high off the ground you want it, and which jobs you would like to make easier. Here is how the Nestera range maps to each β€” so you buy once and enjoy decades of happy chicken keeping.

1. Match the size to your flock

Our Small suits up to 3 medium hens, Medium up to 5, Large coops, Atlas and Wagon up to 8. Aspen 6 is suitable for 6 medium hens. Bantams need less room β€” and it is always wise to size up if your flock might grow.

2. Decide how high off the ground

Close-to-ground House coops are perfect for chicks and broody hens. Mid-raised Lodge and fully-raised Penthouse coops add shelter underneath and save your back at cleaning time.

3. Add the jobs you want made easy

Every coop is ready for an automatic door opener, a WiFi camera and droppings trays. Some models can be equipped with wheels to move it to fresh ground, or a run to let your flock roam safely.

Easy cleaning

Cleaning takes minutes, not hours

Wood absorbs moisture and droppings stick in every crack. Nestera smooth recycled-plastic panels hose down fast and dry quickly β€” so you spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your flock.

  • Optional Slide-out droppings trays empty in seconds
  • Roof, perches and nest boxes lift out for a full clean
  • No absorbed smells, no soaking, no scrubbing
Animal welfare

Healthier chickens, happier eggs

Rounded perches, elevated ventilation and quiet nest boxes are designed around your flock wellbeing. Solid plastic gives red mite far fewer places to hide than cracked, jointed wood.

  • Predator-smart doors and ventilation holes
  • Rot-proof, UV-resistant and weatherproof for decades
  • Made from 70% recycled plastic

Frequently asked questions

How many chickens can live in a Nestera coop?

Small size coop suits up to 2 large birds, 3 medium hens or 5 bantams

Medium up to 3 large, 5 medium or 9 bantams

Large, Atlas and Wagon up to 5 large, 8 medium or 15 bantams.

Aspen 6 up to 6 medium size hens.

Are Nestera coops predator-proof?

Protecting your flock is one of our highest design priorities. Nestera coops incorporate multiple predator-resistant features, including robust recycled-plastic panels, reinforced access doors, secure locking systems on some models, and ventilation openings designed to minimise access points.

Although these features significantly reduce the likelihood of predator entry, no chicken coop can offer an absolute guarantee against every predator or situation. Good husbandry practices, such as closing and securing the coop every evening, remain essential.

Can I install an automatic door opener?

Absolutely. Our Nestera Automatic Door Opener and Smart Auto Door are an optional extra on every coop, with discreet pre-drilled holes included for easy installation. It runs in manual, timer or light-sensor mode.

How long does assembly take?

Most people assemble their coop in well under an hour or two depending of model size β€” no DIY expertise needed. Clear, easy-to-follow instructions are included with every coop and available to download.
